General feelings

Postby Alun » Tue Jun 29, 2010 2:13 pm

OK,
I've only spent about 10 minutes on this forum, but my general feeling is that the back-end of the forum may be better and give the admins more power - the front end is a little lacking - perhaps like Yabb, these can be installed as add-ons later - but for me it just seems to be a little meh :)

Inserting media files is important nowadays - just so you don't have to keep leaving a forum to watch something.

Swear filter - I presume it can be switched on or an add-on installed.

Personally, I don't like the idea of someone having to moderate someones initial posts - it sorts of puts me off from joining a forum as it's like "hey, I'm a new member and want to get down to some discussion straight away - but the people in charge think I will come on here and abuse people straight way" Surely people know that if you start off that way then your gonna get banned pretty soon...?

Don't like the lack of visible split between posts - ie contrasting colours - perhaps this is just a theme that can be changed - just posts seem to merge into one...

OH - get rid of the Save button - I keep hitting the bloody thing instead of Submit!

To summarise - it's good, and probably can be moulded into what our community wants - but does it add anything to what we already have?
Regards

Alun

Good points Alun .

Most people (I think) resist change if they have the choice , some new members are still figuring out the workings of the yabb forum , older members have learned it and become comfortable with it , they are able to help the new members with "learning the ropes" . Here it will be new to everyone , leaving only the Admin to answer Qs , explain the how tos . The transition could be rough .
I dont think this would be any harder to learn then the other was , but some could be put off by having to start over , maybe they lack the time or patients to learn a new forum . we could lose members .

So what are the advantages to this one ? is it more secure , easier for admin to manage ?

( I do like the feature for newbies , a delay in posting , it will keep those pesky spammers at bay )

Do we really get that many spammers? I really don't know as I am not around as much as I used to be.

hey - new girl in town ;)
so first thing that took a minute to work out when posting this reply - i was looking 'up' for the previous posts, before realising they're 'down' this time...
but i'm sure i'll get used to it.

is there a character counter? i'm looking, but can't see one - you guys know i quite often fill the box in the other forum - if there's no limit on positing size, i wonder if some folks could get carried away, or go off-topic too easily by being given the space to keep talking? (i'll shut up now!)

i agree with Alun about the not easily visible splits between each post - i'd got used to that in the other arena, & like that feature

i like the newbie delayed-posting feature - it's standard practice now isn't it in most forums that people have to go thru a reg process so there's a delay before being able to post? i don't see the problem with it, & like that 'safety' feature

i agree T that there will always be some folks who won't like the change, but if we're anticipating more forum usage, we need something easy to administrate & very user-friendly that can cope with the traffic. the other forum's been in use for quite some time so i'm not surprised about needing to upgrage - and i actually think the majority of the regular users will be happy to switch - i'd only suggest when we do switch, its done at a time (in a week) when there's no new rick news to be shared, just so people have time to get to grips with the new format before then having to find new info too - do you get what i mean?

and what's the 'save' button all about? i don't really see it's use or need, but if it has to stay then we just have to get used to working around it!

oh - and much as i love f1, it's reminding me to mention - will there be a limit on the size of 'signatures'? no personal disrespect meant here Alun, but i have to scroll half a page to get past your signature - i can see that some other guys may have an issue with that?...

not sure about the 'foe' tab being quite so visible - i get it's meaning, but i don't know - it's just giving me a 'not so friendly' forum feel? anyone else feel the same, or am i being over-reactive? - be honest!
